The Preloved Price Index — Q3 2026
ShopThing AuctionsBy ShopThing EditorsUpdated October 20268 min read
What the world's most-wanted handbags actually settle for at Japan's top auction houses, published quarterly with the methodology behind every figure.
Quarter three, 2026 · July 29 – September 30
Louis Vuitton canvas handbags
- $650 – $1,290
Chanel leather handbags
- $1,635 – $3,453
Gucci canvas handbags
- $495 – $841
What the quarter looked like
Louis Vuitton and Chanel account for over a third of the settled lots we tracked this quarter — Louis Vuitton on volume, driven by its canvas handbag line, and Chanel on price, with the highest median of any brand here. Dior settles lowest on a typical basis, but its range is nearly as wide as Hermès's, the widest in the table.
How to read the league table
Each median describes comparable pieces within that brand, not the brand's whole catalogue. A median is useful for orientation and poor as a budget — the category-level price guides are where a number you can actually plan against lives.
Why only five brands
We tracked 21 brands with enough settled results to report this quarter; this table shows the five with the deepest supply. A handful of brands — including Christian Louboutin and Rimowa — settled too few lots this window to report a reliable figure at all, and are left out rather than guessed at.
Median settled price by brand
| Brand | Median settled | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Louis Vuitton | $738 | The deepest supply of any brand we track, and still a relatively tight range around its median. |
| Chanel | $1,325 | Second only to Louis Vuitton in volume, with the highest median of the brands tracked — and one of the widest ranges, reflecting how much ground "leather handbag" alone covers. |
| Gucci | $710 | The narrowest range of the brands tracked — results cluster tightly around the median rather than spreading wide. |
| Dior | $550 | The lowest median of the brands tracked, with a spread nearly as wide as Hermès's — a broad mix of everyday and rarer pieces settling together. |
| Hermes | $570 | The widest range of the brands tracked — the gap between a typical result and an exceptional one is bigger here than anywhere else in the table. |
Where the money goes
- Chanel$1,325
- Louis Vuitton$738
- Gucci$710
- Hermes$570
- Dior$550
For press
The Preloved Price Index is published quarterly by ShopThing Auctions. It reports what pre-owned designer handbags actually settle for at Japan's top auction houses — real settled prices with every fee included, not asking prices. Figures are medians and ranges over comparable pieces; individual lot results are never published. Journalists may quote the Index with attribution to ShopThing Auctions.
Every figure is a settled result at Japan's top auction houses over the stated quarter — 1,677 settled lots across 21 brands this window — with all fees included, aggregated by brand. Tracking began July 29, 2026, so early-quarter figures reflect a shorter window than later ones. Ranges are the middle 50% of results for comparable pieces; a brand-level median mixes many different item types together, so treat it as an orientation point, not a specific price to plan against. Figures are USD, shown in your selected currency at 1.36 CAD per USD (as of 2026-09-02).
Common questions
- Are these ShopThing's own sales?
- No. They are settled results tracked through our bidding at Japan's top auction houses, whether or not we won the lot — market data, aggregated by brand. We never publish individual lot results.
- Why don't the brand medians match the category guides exactly?
- A brand-level median mixes every item type that brand sells — handbags, wallets, jewelry, and more — so it's a broader number than a single-category guide like our Chanel leather-handbag breakdown. Use the brand table for orientation, the category guides for a number to actually plan around.
- How often is the Index updated?
- Quarterly. Each edition replaces the last at this address, and the previous quarter stays available in the guides feed.
